چکیده

One interpretation of the unexplained signature observed in the PVLAS experiment invokes a new axion-like particle (ALP) with a two-photon vertex, allowing for photon-ALP oscillations in the presence of magnetic fields. In the range of masses and couplings suggested by PVLAS, the same effect would lead to a peculiar dimming of high-energy photon sources. For typical parameters of the turbulent magnetic field in the galaxy, the effect sets in at Eγ ∼ 10 TeV, providing an ALP signature in the spectra of TeV gamma sources that can be probed with Cherenkov telescopes. A dedicated search will be strongly motivated if the ongoing photon regeneration experiments confirm the PVLAS particle interpretation.

Axion searches with Fermi and IACTs

Axion Like Particles (ALPs), postulated to solve the strong-CP problem, are predicted to couple with photons in the presence of magnetic fields, which may lead to a significant change in the observed spectra of gamma-ray sources such as AGNs. Here we simultaneously consider in the same framework both the photon/axion mixing that takes place in the gamma-ray source and that one expected to occur...

Axion-Like Particles, Cosmic Magnetic Fields and Gamma-Ray Astrophysics

Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) are predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model and give rise to characteristic dimming and polarization effects in a light beam travelling in a magnetic field. In this Letter, we demonstrate that photonALP mixing in cosmic magnetic fields produces an observable distortion in the energy spectra of distant gamma-ray sources (like AGN) for ranges of the ALP para...

Effects of Axion-Photon Mixing on Gamma-Ray Spectra from Magnetized Astrophysical Sources

Astrophysical γ−ray sources come in a variety of sizes and magnetizations. We deduce general conditions under which γ−ray spectra from such sources would be significantly affected by axionphoton mixing. We show that, depending on strength and coherence of the magnetic field, axion couplings down to ∼ (10 GeV) can give rise to significant axion-photon conversions in the environment of accreting ...

Polarization mesurements of gamma ray bursts and axion like particles

A polarized gamma ray emission spread over a sufficiently wide energy band from a strongly magnetized astrophysical object like gamma ray bursts (GRBs) offers an opportunity to test the hypothesis of axion like particles (ALPs). Based on evidences of polarized gamma ray emission detected in several gamma ray bursts we estimated the level of ALPs induced dichroism, which could take place in the ...

Blazar Gamma-rays, Shock Acceleration, and the Extragalactic Background Light

The observed spectra of blazars, their intrinsic emission, and the underlying populations of radiating particles are intimately related. The use of these sources as probes of the extragalactic infrared background, a prospect propelled by recent advances in TeV-band telescopes, soon to be augmented by observations by NASA’s upcoming Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), has been a topic ...
